During our study of the various species that are supposed to be roaming around in our galaxy (and in other galaxies) we have come across all kinds, like species with green skin (1) and copper based blood (2) for instance. This current articles gathers people from other star systems that are said to have ‘vegetal’ genetics.
It seems that the characteristic that is described most is that the skin of certain people would be able to do photosynthesis, just like the leaves of plants and trees! There would even be a humanoid species that as a result of their photosynthetic skin would not even have a respiratory system, because the oxygen their bodies need is provided as a result of this photosynthetic process. Let’s see which species we can already present in this interesting category of humanoids with vegetal traits 🙂
THE MEYY-LWT
While processing the quite extensive second volume of Encyclopedia Galactica I ran into the Meyy-LWT from the planet Joon in the Shyy constellation that we know as ‘ Eta Carinae’ in the Carina Nebula. We have discussed some other species from Carina and the Carina Nebula recently, like the amphibious Fiktu Ytu (3), the blue skinned Shorfar (2) and the Samader Svarhuna who had been refugees from the Orion Wars (4). Let’s see what Elena Danaan has to say about these species when it comes to their vegetal genetic traits: “
“They are part of what is commonly known as the “Vegetal Humanoid Forms”; a very rare genetic combination, most often the result of bio-engineering…..Their photosynthetic epidermis is characteristic of vegetal humanoids. Partly human in nature, these beings eat physical food and have a digestive system, while their skin cells convert photonic energy into oxygen. They do not release the oxygen they produce, but absorb it into their blood cells. This is one reason why, throughout the infinite diversity of the cosmos, we will find vegetal humans with no respiratory system and relatively slender upper limbs.” (5, p.53)
THE EGONARI AND THE EGONI
In our article on Extragalactic Colonies in our galaxy (6) we discussed the Egonari who are a direct colony of the Egoni, one of the Seeder Races that would have contributed parts of their DNA to our genetic pool (7).
They would have settled on a planet in the Andromeda Constellation (8, p. 18-19). In Elena’s first volume of her Encyclopedia Galactica we can read this: “Although they identify as humans and look perfectly human, the Egonari have a rare genetic trait that includes vegetal genetics….As a result of this fact, the Egonari’s skin undergoes photosynthesis and emits a pleasant fragrance, which is a distinctive characteristic of this beautiful species” (9, p.18)
SOME REFLECTIONS
Whenever I come across other species that fit in this vegetal category I will add them here. When I ‘grokked’ to see if there was anything to learn about copper-based blood on our planet, I discovered that there actually are species on Earth that have copper-based blood, like octopuses (2).
I did the same when it comes to this question of animals being able to have photosynthesis through their skin, and the spotted salamander uses it a bit, although only temporarily and only indrect. The photosynthesis doesn’t really occur in their skin, nor in the skin of their embryos, but they have developed a symbiosis with a particular algae that does the photosynthesis and releases the oxygen and the sugars into the embryonic tissue of the salamander’s offspring. This leads to them having a better chance of survival (9).
In another conversation with Grok I asked him if it were possible for a species to live on photosynthesis alone, and it answered that that would require a skin the size of a football field. When I told him that there would still be an active digestive system, and that it would only replace the respiratory system, it responded by saying that that would indeed provide enough oxygen for the body. Isn’t that interesting?
The Meyy-LWT don’t seem to have a nose (10), which isn’t strictly necessary when you don’t have a respiratory system, although I wonder if they are still able to use their sense of smell in any way. Another question I would like to pose is…what happens to this vegetal system of photosynthesis during the night, when photosynthesis isn’t possible?
